Summer Reading Lists

Summer is the best time to build readers, and build on skills learned this past year. Our lists are made up of a variety of reading; picture books, chapter books, non-fiction and program readers. Some books are part of a series. Advanced readers enjoy non-fiction books as well, and many intructional books make for good summer reading, both for projects and knowledge. We built our Reading Lists for Kids LEAVING the grade listed.

Kids leaving 1st grade have a good reading foundation. Time to build vocabulary with some good Read Alouds (books you read to them). Step Readers and beginning chapter books that will build confidence. Here's our selection:

School Days Around the World
This reader takes a look at an average school day in the lives of children from seven countries, showing how they are all different and yet all the same.

Little Bears Visit

Owl At Home

Mice are Nice

The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash
Remember field trips? Kids took them when California schools had money. This one gets a little out of hand, due to an unusual animal at the farm.

Alexander Who Used To Be Rich Last Sunday

Where The Wild Things Are
The original - before the movie!

Skippy Jon Jones in the Dog House

High Tide In Hawaii (MTH#28)
Just one of the Magic Tree House books. This one is a summer vacation favorite. Get kids hooked on this series and watch them go!

Bears - Animal Lives

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
What happens if you give a mouse a cookie? Why, he'll need a glass of milk to go with it! He'll also need a straw, a napkin, a mirror -- each item prompts the need for another. This is a great read-aloud - over and over!

Bedtime for Francis
It may be bedtime for Frances, but that doesn't mean Frances is ready to go to bed -- not by a long shot. First she must have a glass of milk and make certain Mother and Father have each kissed her good night (twice). Then she is ready to imagine there is a tiger in her room, and a giant, and ... each time Frances thinks up something new, off she goes to tell her ever-patient, if increasingly weary, parent

Lionel in the Fall
A good summer preview for kids - Lionel's first day of school!
